A designer tests the route through both storeys. Positioning the stair above the existing staircase can sometimes use space efficiently and support a coherent fire-protected route, but every house is different.

Main technical considerations

Space-saving stairs

Alternating-tread stairs have restricted applications and are not a general solution for a main bedroom suite. A compliant conventional stair is usually preferable where space allows. Winders can help a stair turn, but geometry and headroom must remain safe and comfortable.

Fire strategy

Adding another storey changes the escape arrangement. Current Building Regulations guidance may require a protected route and suitable fire doors, detection and construction.
